Even during daylight Dwarka’s footpaths are unsafe. Why’s that? Missing manhole covers, of course. And despite repeated complaints, things haven’t moved much.
BK Mishra, a resident of Sector 4, said, “There are several open manholes in my area. You can see some near Saheta Apartments and Sanchar Vihar Apartments. I know a maid from Saheta who had an accident because of one of these manholes.”
At many places, the open manholes are not even visible. Some manholes have been covered with bushes and dry horticulture waste, making the situation even more dangerous.
Ashok Jah, a resident of Sector 3, Gauri Ganesh Apartments, said, “Sector 3 footpaths are really bad. Near Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, manholes are not visible and the drain has a depth of 8 ft — so you can imagine the danger! I don’t understand why DDA is so callous about this.”
Some residents have made a list of locations where open manholes are common.
A resident of Sector 13, Ram Bihari Singh, counted more than 100 open manholes on his morning walk through sectors 3, 12 and 13.
Residents have been sharing photographs of open manholes on WhatsApp groups, raising the issue again and again at meetings with civic bodies. MK Singh, a resident of Sector 17, said, “These manholes need to be monitored constantly, replacements need to be done whenever required. This is the responsibility of agencies.”
Some manholes have been covered with loose slabs, making the situation worse. Such manholes can be seen in front of Kautilya Apartments, Om Apartments and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Apartments in Sector 14, and the footpath in front of Metro View Apartments, Netaji Subhash Apartments, Durga Pooja Apartments, Shabad Apartments in Sector 13.
