Why are Dwarka Sec 22 residents scared of the dark?

The park behind Jagran Apartments in Sector 22, Dwarka, is plunged into darkness every evening. There are no functional lights in the park for more than a year now.

Residents say it becomes a den of antisocial and illegal activities after dark. According to some, this leaves apartments susceptible to thefts at night, as thieves can easily sneak in from the park.

Sumit Verma, a resident of the nearby Bank Vihar Apartments, said, “A few months ago, there was a theft in our society, where the thieves were found to have entered from the park. If there were proper lights there, this incident could have been avoided.”

“We cannot visit the park for evening walks, as it becomes unsafe after dark. We, along with a social organisation and a women’s association, have complained to the Delhi Development Authority [DDA] and the local police, but nothing has been done to restore the lights,” said Pramila Malik, joint secretary of the apartment.

Cicily Kodiyan, president of Association of Neighborhood Ladies Get Together (ANHLGT), said, “We have raised the issue in police-public meetings as well, but they don't seem to have taken it seriously. We have now decided to meet officials at their office for a solution to the problem.”

Meanwhile, deputy director, Horticulture, Prem Chandra, said that they have made the Electrical Department aware of the issue and the lights should be functioning soon.
