Come Friday, and G-towners should prepare themselves for a refreshing brush with culture. Gurgaon Utsav, a folk extravaganza, will be held from April 13-15 at the amphitheatre of Aravalli Biodiversity Park from 7pm onwards.

Entry is free of cost.

Gurgaon Utsav, in its seventh year, is organised by the Arts and Literature Foundation in partnership with the MCG and the Department of Art and Cultural Affairs, Haryana.

On April 13, Dastango [storyteller] Mohammed Farooqui will present his play, Dastan-e Karn Az Mahabharat, based on the epic’s heroic character Karna.

Padma Shri Prahlad Tipanya from Malwa will take centre stage on April 14 with his rendition of Kabir in the folk-style of the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh.

“His troupe includes singers and instrumentalists playing manjira, dholak, harmonium, timki, violin, tambura and kartal. It will be fascinating to watc!” said Anjali Singh, another organiser.

And on the last day of the festival (April 15), the Nooran sisters will give a performance on Bulle Shah’s poetry. The sisters are famous for following the Sufi traditions of Punjab, and Sham Chaurasi Gharana and Marasi traditions of music.

They have performed several Sufi songs, including Allah Hu, Jugni and Tung Tung; and they shot to prominence after singing Pataka guddi for Highway, which opened the gateways for a collaboration with AR Rahman.

Aside from these major performances, there will be folk artistes from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
