Fire in I'puram slum; second in the same area in a month!

A massive fire was reported from a slum in Kanauni village near Indirapuram earlier today. Residents of local high rises reported thick smoke billowing from the area. The Ghaziabad fire department has taken control of the situation. Although no casualty has been reported so far, the magnitude of damage is yet to be ascertained.

Locals also reported loud explosions, which might have been caused by gas cylinders stored in the shanties.

“We have pressed in several fire tenders and the situation is being brought under control,” said SK Singh, chief fire officer of Ghaziabad.

The incident comes only a month after a similar incident that happened in the same locality, reducing to ashes over100 shanties and rendering many homeless.

The claims of the local authorities regarding initiating measures to curb such incidents in future were rendered false with what happened today.

Following the previous incident, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) had conducted a survey to find out the details of slums in the area. It also claimed to have initiated preventive measures at the time.
