'Proper, timely procedure should be followed in Voter ID-related issues'

Voting for the first phase of general elections took place on Thursday in Ghaziabad constituency and as a resident of ATS Advantage, a high-rise in Indirapuram, I too wanted to exercise my rights but the issue was that Voter ID cards of 21 people, including mine, which were not delivered!

Though many residents of my society, having their ID cards, applied for address change online whereas some of them were issued new ones. Many got it at their doorsteps too but what angered me was the fact the approach of the Apartment Owners' Association (AOA) and the Booth Level Officer (BLO), who fail to hand over these IDs to all well before the polling process!

I agree it is not always possible for the management to deliver these cards to the voters on time. Moreover, they are compelled to take the assistance of local representative bodies for distributing it but despite that, there are over a thousand people who are awaiting these for months now!

Though I received my card just in time before the polling commenced following my tweet to the district magistrate a day prior to elections, I feel it is an important issue which needs to be resolved. These Voter IDs not only allow you to cast vote but serve as proof for various official and personal documentation work. Besides, there is always a risk of theft, misuse.

A proper mechanism to deal with related issues is the need of the hour so that we don't get deprived of our voting rights!
