With two events falling on the same day, Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan, Ghaziabad Transport Department has decided to give free rides for all women passengers in roadways buses till August 18.

Besides, on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, women would be able to travel free on luxury bus services like Janrath and Volvo.

"Tickets will be issued to the women in these luxury bus services, but its value would be zero," Regional Manager, Ghaziabad Roadways, AK Singh informed.

Meanwhile, for better operation of this move, the department has also cancelled leaves of the staff. However, they will be compensated for their work with 'encouragement amount'.

This service can be availed at all the 735 buses under all the depots of Ghaziabad region. Under this, women can avail this facility in city and intercity buses as well, told Singh.

"Conductors will make sure that the maximum number of women passengers are seated properly. In case of delay, the drivers have been asked to leave from the depot when the passengers' count is minimum 25. We wouldn't want to keep back any sister to tie Rakhi on her brother's wrist on time," Singh added.

Singh also said that 100 more buses can be added to the existing routes if the service of the existing fleet runs short.

This is the second consecutive year that the department has allowed women to avail free bus rides on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. This scheme was started by the department in 2018.
