Dwarka: SDMC brings 'ban on polythene bags' in action

Days after the ban on the use of polythene was announced by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), the decision was brought into action from Friday morning.

In this regard, the SDMC and the RWAs are working from their ends to educate people on the issue. The SDMC department has been distributing pamphlets, whereas, the RWAs are holding discussions on the subject across the Dwarka city.

One of the SDMC officials said that they were busy in covering local markets, meeting people and urging them not to use polythene bags. "We have to cover the entire ward and educate them. From tomorrow onwards, the prosecution would be started," said the official on condition of anonymity.

"As per the rules, a penalty of Rs 5000 is imposed if anyone is caught using banned plastic bags. Be it the market or society, all would be prosecuted if they use polythene bag," he added.

When CitySpidey reached out to the SDMC Leader of the House, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, she said, "We are strict on this and the rule would be enacted properly. There is a need for cooperation from the members of the community and the market. We are seriously concerned for the environment, therefore, it is my humble appeal to all to join hands and support us in making it successful.”

Members of the community have welcomed SDMC's decision open-heartedly. Even the RWAs, Managements of societies and other social organisations are suggesting points, and asking the officials about how to make the mission successful.

President of Dwarka Forum, Sushil Kumar said, “It's a good move with plenty of challenges to implement. People's participation is important, otherwise, it will have no impact on the ground. It is also important for SDMC to make this as a movement for a better environment. Public awareness at public places is the need of the hour. This is not an urban issue, this problem prevails in rural areas also."

Kumar further added, "Look at the mountains, you will find plastic bags there also, and well-educated people are behind this. There are challenges and I hope this would be a success and would not remain as an advisory only. We have seen what happened to the advisory on solid waste management. It was a big failure.”
