The Delhi Government is going to add 100 more buses to its existing public transport fleet. The addition will help public transport services cater to more commuters in the wake of the free-travel scheme for women scheduled to start from October 29. These standard-floor buses will be part of the cluster bus scheme.
Of the 100 buses, 25 are stationed at the Dwarka depot, while the other 25 arrived at the Rani Khera depot last month. Another 25 buses will be stationed at the Hari Nagar depot.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had flagged off 25 non-AC standard-floor buses with hydraulic lift on August 20. These buses will be part of the 1,000-bus fleet to be inducted into the cluster scheme.
The chief minister had assured Delhiites that the city would get 3,000 buses in the next seven to eight months. By October-end 300 buses were to add to the fleet. However, due to changes in the specifications of CCTV cameras and rear cameras the deadline could not be met.
The government also plans to roll out 1,000 AC buses under the cluster scheme by January.
The number of buses in Delhi is less than 5,500 against the current demand of 11,000 buses.
