Signature Bridge closure delayed due to festival season

The Signature Bridge, which is going to remain closed for 12 days, from November 3 to 14, was opened for public only last year. Delhi Tourism and Transportation Department Corporation (DTTDC) will use the intervening time to remove the machinery and crane, used for the construction of four-storey observatory deck on top of the pylons.

The closure is bound to result in traffic nighmare as the bridge had become a lifeline for many commuters. The DTTDC has been reportedly asking the traffic police to completely close the area for traffic since June.

The agency offered to remove some equipment during daytime in June while keeping the bridge open. But the traffic police officials rejected the agency's request as they found the plan unsafe.

The traffic decided to give permission after the festivities when the volume of traffic usually thins out.

Now, the construction agency has been given the no-objection certificate (NOC) to close the bridge and remove the machinery.

Officials said since the equipment was heavy and right above the bridge, no traffic movement will be permitted while the work is under process.

The four-storey observatory deck, which was built at the height of 154 metres, was completed in June. The construction equipment, such as ladders, tower crane and platforms, used for constructing the deck are still stuck up there. The agency will need 12 hours a day for at least 15-20 days to completely remove the equipment.

The DTTDC will carry out the work between 11pm and 5 am.
