HSPCB issues show cause notice to Mayfield Garden for flouting environment norms

The Haryana State Pollution Control Body (HSPCB) on Tuesday issued a show cause notice to the administrator of J Block, Mayfield Garden, located in Sector 51, for violating the environmental laws.

The authority directed the administrator to deposit the penalty within seven days failing which an action under the provision of section 31-A of Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act 1981 will be taken.

According to the official, on Monday, HSPCB field officer inspected the site and found that the DG set was operational which is a gross violation of EPCA's direction.

The action came after a complaint was received by the HSPCB which stated that despite a ban and restriction on the use of DG sets in NCR region, it was still operated in the society. DG sets were banned by EPCA for polluting the air and releasing particulate emissions.

Earlier, on October 31, one of the residents of J block Mayfield Garden lodged a complaint at the pollution control board requesting to take action on the issue. Satpal Thakran, a resident of J block and a complainant, said, “There is only one DG set which has been running in the society for last the five years despite a ban from the authority. The operation of DG set is not only causing an increase in pollution level but also putting financial burden on the society. The increasing level of pollution in air is posing serious health risk to the residents.”

They also informed that the previous administrator had already taken permission from Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vidyut Nigam (DHBVN) for restoring the electricity connection but due to the delay by the current administration, the connection has not been restored yet. “If the amount of Rs. 6 lakhs is deposited to DHBVN then there will be no need of DG set,” said Thakran.

Meanwhile, Col. Roshan Lal Yadav, administrator of the society, refused to comment on the matter.
