New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will start virtual autopsy, a facility which will examine the body without loss or destruction of any forensic evidence, by April.

A CT machine will be installed by the department of forensic medicine in AIIMS which would help the experts to perform the autopsy.

Virtual autopsy is an emerging science which allows the doctors to know the nature of death using digital CT scan or MRI without dissecting the body. AIIMS is the first medical institute in India to start virtual autopsy. Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has approved the project. The institute has been allocated Rs. 5 crore for the same.

Speaking about it in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said the service will be extended to other centres as well.

“Training programmes will be conducted for other institutes for setting up such centres. The process will be cost and time-effective, as it would take only 30 minutes to complete one autopsy as against two-and-half hours in regular post-mortem,” the minister said.

Around 3,000 autopsies are conducted at AIIMS every year. The conventional method takes up to three days to complete the procedure depending upon the availability of experts and complexity of the case.
