Heavy downpour hit Delhi tonight; three more wet days ahead

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thursday owing to fresh westerly disturbances. As a consequence, Delhi might be lashed by heavy rains for the next three days starting Wednesday (March 11).

The unseasonal wet weather will visit north and northwest India, some of the states are likely to receive heavy rainfall. The IMD said that the western disturbance is set to hit its peak.

The states that have been given orange alert include Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan. A yellow alert was given to Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh for Wednesday.

The orange alert is sounded for residents to “be prepared” for rough weather, while the yellow watch is advice to “be aware” of the conditions.
The rainfall in the region is a result of the western disturbance that lies over Afghanistan. The phenomenon occurs when westerly winds interact with the easterly winds emerging from the Bay of Bengal.
