New coronavirus cases continue to surge indicating second wave in Delhi

New Delhi: Fresh coronavirus cases are surging day-by-day raising speculations of a second wave in the national capital. On Thursday, Delhi reported 2,737 new cases, which was the highest single-day spike in 67 days. The reported figure was the highest since June 28. 

This was the third consecutive day when the new cases were above the 2,000 mark. On June 23, the city had recorded its highest single-day spike of 3,947.  The cumulative tally has now reached 1,82,306. With 19 fatalities, the death toll reached 4,500 in the last 24 hours. 

The new cases outnumbered the recoveries by a significant margin, surging the active cases in the national capital. 1,528 patients recovered from the deadly disease on Thursday. A total of 1,60,114 patients have recovered in the national capital so far. The recovery rate declined to 87.82 per cent from 88.31 per cent on the previous day.

The active cases increased by 1,190 in the national capital. Delhi has now 17,692 active cases. It had dropped below 10,000 mark before the cases started surging again.

The number of containment zones jumped to 922 on Thursday from 894 on the previous day.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stepped in to start an active engagement with the Delhi government led by the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to take stock of the surge in cases in the national capital. 

Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) said, “The active cases and deaths were on decline but both the parameters have gone significantly up in the last few weeks. Now, the MHA has started an active engagement with the Delhi government.”
