The manufacturing of bricks is confined to rural and peri-urban areas and operates as a small-scale industry. The industry comprises different small-scale, labour intensive units called ‘brickworks’ and is one of the leading employment-generating industries for rural population including both men and women during agricultural off season.
In India, the brick industry has not been modernised. The old-age practice of making bricks manually by burning them in conventional kilns is still being followed. The brick industry of India, coupled with the shortage of supply of skilled labourers, has to depend upon migrant labourers to a great extent.
