Closed unallotted shops at sector 12 market being used as urinals

The stink in the air makes it obvious that the shops are being used by people as open urinals.

Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had constructed these shops hoping that they will be buzzing local shopping centres. But years of mismanagement and lack of attention have turned these abandoned shops into a bad dream. Today they serve more as urinals and a place for antisocial elements to loiter around.

Closed and unalloted shops at Sector 12 market near Bal Bharti School have been reduced to being used as urinals. One could see those shops while visiting the market or the nearby area. What one will witness is a lot of garbage all around, all-pervasive stink, and abandoned shops with broken doors. As informed by the shopkeepers and footpath vendors these shops have been in lying closed and unalloted for more than a decade. A shopkeeper at the market Ramesh Chopra informed that since 2012, he is in the market and this dismal situation has remained the same. Says “ There are more than 20 shops here awaiting allotment. People use the space as urinals, as a result, the iron shutters of those shops are decaying. Many doors are damaged. DDA officials must come here to see the situation themselves."

As informed by Chopra there are two toilets made by DDA but both are in bad shape and not in use because the maintenance is poor. One toilet for ladies was seen locked while the toilet for men was with missing gate and dirty. “We can maintain the toilets but that too is not happening. DDA must look into it. Those toilets should be maintained and those shops should be allotted.” says Chopra.

CitySpidey took a round of the market and found that there was no maintenance or sanitation work being done by the DDA. RK Singh a regular visitor to the market and a resident of Sector 12 said, “This shows the sheer negligence of DDA and Corporation both. DDA is responsible for the condition of the shops and the SDMC is responsible for making the area neglected as being used as a urinal.”

CitySpidey tried to reach out to the DDA and SDMC officials but they were unresponsive.
