World Hypertension Day: 5 ways to control hypertension

Hypertension or high blood pressure may not sound very harmful of a disease, however, in severity, it could be fatal. It has few signs but is a considerable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Nowadays, this problem is very common among people of all age groups. It is necessary to take extra care of your body and mind if you are a hypertension patient.

Here are some ways to control hypertension without medication.

Eat less salt

The most effective way to balance your blood pressure is to reduce intake of salt in your diet. A low-sodium eating plan has almost the same effect on blood pressure as two blood pressure tablets, according to studies. Limiting sodium can help you keep your blood pressure in check if you are suffering from this problem.

Consume more potassium

Food which contains high amounts of potassium is very beneficial for people with hypertension. Try to consume food such as potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, and other veggies and fruit with high potassium to maintain the blood pressure level of your body. But keep in mind, if you have kidney problems, then consult your doctor first because intake of too much potassium is not good for kidney patients.

DASH diet

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet plan was developed with the goal of lowering blood pressure. Vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and low-calorie dairy products are included in this diet which is good for a hypertension patient. The DASH diet will help hypertension patients and also helps in losing weight.

Dr. Karambir Rana, MBBS says, “This is a very useful diet for those who are dealing with this problem, especially for people who are in their 40s. It’s very important to keep a check on your BP level to avoid any kind of other health issues such as heart stroke, paralysis, kidney problem, and several other problems. Whether it is low BP, high BP, or continuous fluctuation of BP, is not at all good. So, it's necessary to keep your blood pressure balanced and this diet can help you achieve good results."

Reduce excess stress

Stress is the main cause of blood pressure fluctuation. People who take excess stress feel symptoms such as headache, body pain, and even vomiting when their blood pressure shoots up or decreases. So, it is very important for a hypertension patient to stay happy and relaxed.

Take plenty of rest

Take proper rest and try to sleep if you are not feeling well because of hypertension, blood pressure naturally drops. when you sleep.  And the blood pressure can be affected if you don't get enough sleep. Individuals who are sleep-deprived, particularly those who are in their middle years, are more likely to develop high blood pressure.
