Indirapuram: Residents unhappy with poor maintenance of Swarna Jayanti Park

Indirapuram: Residents of Niti Khand 1, Indirapuram, are not happy with the present state of their neighbourhood park, Swarna Jayanti Park. They say that open littering of garbage has become a common sight in the park and no one is looking after the park to keep it in good shape. The residents urge Ghaziabad Development Authority to look into the matter.

The park, which is spread over 25 acres, is used by residents of neighbouring residential colonies such as Niti Khand 1, Niti Khan 3, Niti Khand 4, Gyan Khand 4 and Manoj Vihar. The park entry is not free and one has to buy a ticket of Rupees 10 for it.

According to residents, the park once used to be a serene location with lush greenery, ideal for morning and evening walks. In the last year, things have turned pretty bad. The poor condition of the park can be seen even before you enter the park as garbage can be seen littered right outside the park entrance. Ghaziabad Development Authority is the agency looking after the maintenance of the park. But by judging the sorry state of affairs it is clear that they are not doing a good job of it.

Raj Kumar Mishra, 62, a regular visitor to the park and resident of Shakti Khand, says, "The moment you enter the park you signs of ill maintenance all around. Everything seems to be in a disarray. It's been more than 6 months that no maintenance work has been done in this park. People litter in the park and it seems there is no sanitation staff taking care of it. The plants are overgrown and need pruning and the grass needs cutting."

Kishan Singh, a Niti Khand 1 resident, says, "These days, I don't feel comfortable visiting the park because of the littering throughout the park. Unwanted grass has grown on the walking path. It used to be so beautiful earlier, it's a shame that no one is looking after it."

Residents tell us there is a small pond in the park where they used to go boating. However, the water of the pond hasn't been replaced. It looks quite polluted and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The visitors to the park avoid going for these boat rides because of the visibly polluted water. Only a few youngsters are seen going for boating rides while braving the stench coming out of the pond water.

CitySpidey attempted to contact Ghaziabad Development Authority officials on this issue, but they were unavailable to comment.
