Hundreds of parents held a demonstration against a hike in school fee outside Modern Public School, in Shahberi, near Crossings Republik, Gautam Budh Nagar, on March 27.

The parents threatened to write to the district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar if the fees were not rolled back.

According to parents, the school management had hiked fees by almost 50 per cent. "The school has also hiked transport fees by 50 per cent for distances up to 5 km," complained parents. When they discussed the matter with the school faculty, they said the decision had been taken by the higher management.

Vikas Tyagi, one of the parents protesting against the fee hike, told City Spidey that the school had increased both tuition and transport fees. "Last year, the quarterly tuition fee was Rs 6,650, which the school has now increased to Rs 11,710," he said. "The transport fee has been increased from Rs 800 to Rs 1,200."

"Earlier, the school used to offer a 25 per cent discount on school fee if a second child was admitted, but it has now even discontinued this," said Tyagi.

When City Spidey discussed the matter with Alka Sharma, the school's vice-principal, she said the school had asked parents to be patient for two days, during which the issue would be discussed with the school's higher management to take a final call on the fee increase.
