Residents are livid that such a decision could have been made without consulting them first — that, too, barely 20 m from the residential area and 300 m from two private schools inside the complex.
Residents of Malibu Towne in Sector 47, Gurgaon, are protesting against the opening of a brewery inside the township, barely 20 m from the residential area.
The RWA of the township has even taken its complaint to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
The township, spread across 180 acres on Sohna road, houses approximately 800 families.
Residents feel setting up a brewery in a residential area will lead to a host of problems, including drunken brawls, parking trouble and congestion.
“The township market is not a big one, and is barely 300 m from two private schools within the gated community. On the one hand, we are talking about no liquor vends on highways, and on the other we are allowing a brewery to be set up in the vicinity of schools! How could Malibu Estate Private Ltd [MEPL] lease out the place for a beer brewery in the first place! Not only that, work has also started on it,” complained Alka Dalal, former RWA president.
Residents said meetings with SC Sharma, MEPL general manager, turned out futile.
The builder, it seems, has already authorised a site for a nursery school barely 50 m from the beer brewery.
“Residents should have been consulted before such a step was taken," said Manoj Luthria, a resident. "The brewery will be open till 11.30 pm every day, so there’ll be strangers coming in at late hours. Plus, it will mean a lot of noise at a time when we need quiet the most. We have kids going to school early in the morning.”
Officials in the excise department, however, said they haven’t received any application so far from the brewery.
Deputy commissioner, excise and taxation, Aruna Singh, said, “We are not aware of any such establishment being set up and haven't received any application for a beer brewery from Malibu Towne Shopping Arcade.”
