In Dwarka, having dustbins doesn't make sense!

Dustbins placed at public places across Dwarka by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) have failed to serve their purpose — like it is with most government initiatives.

The garbage is not cleared out from these dustbins, and so they are always overflowing. Quite a few are damaged too, and not in a state to be used. They are easy to spot in areas around Ashirvad Chowk, in the markets of Sectors 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12.

Sarita Bawa, a resident of Sector 4, lashes out, “You can see how the dustbins at the bus stands in front of Sector 4 and 12 markets are always overflowing — they ever cleared out! So what options do we have other then littering the roads! Sometimes, I feel like taking out the garbage myself.”

Hundreds of dustbins were distributed, but that was just a part of meeting the targets under Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, and no real work was achieved, feels RK Sharma, a resident of Sector 11. He adds, “The market of Sector 11 at Ashirvad Chowk, which doesn’t have too many eateries compared to other markets, has 80 dustbins and none are being used! And those markets that have more eateries at ground floor have fewer dustbins. So, the whole initiative was just a gimmick to gain political mileage. ”
