New Delhi: Delhi government on Thursday launched a free WiFi scheme on Thursday. He inaugurated 109 hotspots installed in the national capital.
Launching the Wi-Fi scheme at bus stop at ITO, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated that his party (AAP) has fulfilled all promises that it made with the people of Delhi in the 2015 Assembly elections. “Delhi will become the first city in the world to have free WiFi services,” he said.
He announced that 500 hotspots will be installed every week. A total of 11,000 hotspots will be set up at bus stands and other places including markets and residential colonies.
The free WiFi scheme was also launched at Kashmiri Gate Metro station in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia.
The other places where free WIFi scheme was started included Kashmiri Gate ISBT, ITO Bus Stand, Mandi House Bus Stand, Delhi Secratariat, Indraprastha Metro station, Vishwavidyalaya bus stand and Sarai Kale Khan bus stand.
After the installation of all the 11,000 hotspots, 22 lakh people will be ableto avail the services at a time. A consumer will be able to use free 15 GB data every month. The move is expected to benefit the students in the city. They will be able to save money on the internet.
The hotspots will be installed on the top of almost 4,000 bus stands in the city. Apart from that, it will also be installed at 7,000 other places including Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and market associations.
As per information, 6,100 hotspots will be of 200 mbps capacity and 5,900 hospots will be of 50 mbps speed.
The range of all the hotspots will be in a radius of 100 meter. At one hotspot, around 150-200 people would be able to use internet.
An application was made for the users to access internet at the hotspots. After filling the KYC (Know Your Customer), the users will get an OTP (One-Time Password). After entering the OTP, users will be able to use the internet.
The government also informed that CCTV cameras installed in the city will also be linked to the hotspots for strengthening the security system further.
