CAA-NRC row: Mandi House placed under Sec 144 ahead of Jamia march

New Delhi: Section 144 has been imposed in Central Delhi's Mandi House area ahead of a protest march planned by Jamia Millia Islamia students against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The students have planned a huge march from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar, the designated area for protests in the National Capital.

Authorities have banned large gathering in the area. Security has also been beefed up to meet any eventuality. The Delhi Police declined permission to the students of the university to hold any demonstration.

Meanwhile, the protest by the students against the Act entered ninth day on Tuesday. On December 15, the Delhi Police had entered the university campus and fired teargas shells and lathicharged students leaving many students injured.

The CAA seeks to grant citizenship to religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The protestors argue that the Act is discriminatory in nature and hence violates the secular character of the Constitution.
