Greater Noida: In a bizarre incident, cops from Site-5 police station arrested a man near Pari Chowk who had allegedly made extortion calls to family members of a missing person. He had accessed the mobile numbers from posters and pamphlets pasted at public places.

The accused used to make calls on the number printed on the posters. He demanded a ransom from the family imposing as a kidnapper and saying that the missing person was with him. He also said that if the amount was not given, he will hurt or kill the person.

The man was exposed when a resident of Greater Noida approached the police on January 3 (Friday) after receiving a ransom call from the accused on January 2 (Thursday).

The resident had already filed a missing complaint about his 24-year-old son, who is mentally challenged, in November last year at the Site-5 police station.

As per the complainant, the accused had demanded to transfer Rs 20,000 through Paytm, of which, Rs 5,000 was transferred on January 2. But after no whereabouts of his missing son was known, he decided to raise the issue with police on Friday.

Moving swiftly, the police launched a search operation and arrested the accused near Pari Chowk area of the city.

During interrogation, it was found that the accused had used the same modus operandi as many as 20 to 25 times prior to this. 

The accused has been booked under section 386 (Extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt)  of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
