Ghaziabad: Police here have launched an anti-crime helpline where citizens can tip off the law enforcing agency if they witness any criminal activity. The police assured anonymity to such whistleblower.
Ghaziabad SSP Kalanidhi Naithani informed via his twitter handle on Sunday evening that an anti-crime helpline number is issued by the district police. The helpline is operational from Monday onwards.
The helpline number is 9454403434 which is accessible 24×7. Anyone can call on the number and share information about the crime he or she has come across. Besides, the helpline is also registered on WhatsApp so one can also share proofs of the crimes through the app.
The officials said that the complainants can share images and audio or video clips via WhatsApp on the same helpline number.Naithani said that the helpline would aid in reporting many petty crimes, civic offences like gambling, animal trafficking, illegal sale of liquor etc. which take place in streets and closed community areas but never get reported.
"People fear reporting these crimes to the police as reporting them reveals the identity of the complainant. It puts them in a risky situation. To avoid such a situation, most of the people stay silent. However, this helpline would allow people to report crimes and police will not disclose the identity of the complainants," he explained.
