New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) with the help of Delhi Police reunited a 2-year-old girl with her parents in riot hit area of East Delhi. As DCW claimed, the girl was separated from her parents during the communal riots last week.
In a statement, chairperson of DCW, Swati Maliwal claimed that the commission came to know about the girl through media reports and swung into action to find out her parents.
In its effort to search, the women commission found the girl’s family in the riot-affected areas. The DCW team learnt that the girl was staying at a shelter home for riot victims in Mustafabad with a woman.
When the team reached the shelter home and spoke to the woman, she informed DCW, saying, “She found the child sitting alone near a mosque in the chaos during the riots. The girl was crying and appeared to be severely traumatised.”
As per the DCW statement, the woman took the girl with her, however she did not inform the police about it because she was afraid of approaching them. However, when the DCW team explained her that the commission is trying to locate the girl’s family, she agreed to hand her over to the team in police presence.
Following this, the commission worked with the local police and conducted a joint operation to find the child's family. The team went door-to-door in the affected areas and spoke to the locals. Information about the child was also published to spread the word, besides making announcements from the mosque where the woman had found her.
Later, as per the DCW, the girl’s father was called to the police station where he showed evidence that she was his daughter. After completing the paperwork, the child was handed over to the family.
DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “We heard in media reports that a 2-year-old girl was lost. We immediately formed a team and started tracing the girl’s family. We received a lot of cooperation from the police. DCW Member Firdaus Khan, spoke to Joint Commissioner Alok Kumar, who instructed his team to provide full support to the commission.”
She added, “We are very happy that we were able to reunite the child with her family. I also wish to thank the two women who played important roles in this case.”
