Delhi: Cold wave conditions likely to continue till Dec 18

New Delhi: The minimum temperature dropped to 4.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. It was the lowest in this winter season so far. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the drop in temperature was five degrees below the normal temperature recorded at this time of the year.

Now, the IMD has forecasted cold wave conditions in Delhi from December 16 to 18. The weather department said that the temperature will drop further in the next three days during day and night.

Cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less. On the other hand, a cold day is declared when the maximum temperature drops 4.5 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature.

The significant drop in temperature has happened because of snowfall over the last few days at western Himalayan range. Western Himalayan range falls in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Snowfall in western Himalayan range causes cold north-westerly winds in the Delhi region. It leads to fall in temperatures. On top of it, due to the influence of the La Nina climate pattern, temperatures have been dropping across the globe.
