The residents of Sector 9 Dwarka donned their green hats and planted about 80 saplings in Park No 4 of the sector today. The drive took place under the aegis of the Federation of RWAs (FORWAs) of the sector in association with the horticulture department of Delhi Development Authority.

Residents from various societies in Sector 9, such as pockets 1 and 2, Bhrigu Apartments, Sri Radha Apartments, Paradise Apartments, Royal Residency Apartments, Ganpati Apartments and Manzil Apartments, participated in the drive. The secretary of FORWAs and president of Sector 9 Pocket 1, GC Upadhyay; its joint secretary, Ramvir Rana; and a resident of Sector 9 Pocket 2, DP Gaur, were present on the occasion.

Residents shared their experiences of green self-initiatives and pledged to take care of the saplings they planted. Innovative concepts, such as birthday and anniversary planting drives, which some residents have been involved in with help from FORWAs, were also discussed.

FORWAs general secretary and a resident of Sector 9 Pocket 1, MK Singh, said, “Our main focus is to improve the greenery of the area. As you can see, our parks are green, and we carry out tree-planting drives quite frequently. We want to rid Dwarka of pollution, and we want community participation in it.”

Elaborating on the concept of planting saplings on special occasions, RP Gupta, also secretary of FORWAs and a resident of Sri Radha Society of Sector 9, said, “We appeal to residents to adopt a sapling, and plant trees to commemorate special occasions. Our concept of ‘birthday planting drives’ has, in fact, caught the imagination of quite a few people. So far, we have planted hundreds of trees to celebrate birthdays. More such drives will be organised, particularly in the rainy season.”
