It is a big day for India as Punjab-based Harnaaz Sandhu, who represented the country at the 70th Miss Universe 2021, has won the title.  Harnaaz will bring home the Miss Universe crown after 21 years. Lata Dutta had won the crown in 2002.
The 21-year-old model was crowned the Miss Universe 2021 on December 12, 2021, at Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel.

The news of Harnaaz's win was posted by the official Instagram account of Miss Universe Organisation. They shared the exact moment that Harnaaz was crowned the coveted title at the event being held in Israel. "The new Miss Universe is India," they captioned the clip. The clip shows Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza of Mexico crowning an emotional Harnaaz, who will become her successor.

Who is Harnaaz Sandhu?

Harnaaz Sandhu of India has crowned the 70th Miss Universe on Monday, topping a field of some 80 contestants. She beat 79 other contestants from various countries including runner-up Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira and second runner-up Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane to claim the prestigious title.

Harnaaz is a 21-year-old model, born and brought up in Chandigarh. Sandhu attended school and college in Chandigarh and pursued a master's in Public Administration. Going by her social media post, she enjoys spending time with friends. She also has an interest in singing, acting, cooking, and dancing. For fitness, she prefers yoga, swimming, and horse riding. Harnaaz is also fond of writing as she enjoys writing couplets in Punjabi.

Harnaaz mentioned in her Miss Universe delegate bio that her mother is her inspiration who broke the shackles of patriarchy, became a gynecologist to lead her family. Harnaaz is a supporter of women’s causes and empowerment. She is also a strong supporter of women’s rights to education, careers, and freedom of choice.

Harnaaz, who started her journey in Pageantry at age 17, was the winner of Times Fresh Face Miss Chandigarh 2017, Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018, and Femina Miss India Punjab 2019. She has also starred in Punjabi films like Yaara Diyan Poo Baran and Bai Ji Kuttange.

Harnaaz expressed her feeling in her Instagram handle, “It has never been my journey, it has been our journey. I began with baby steps and as I come closer to the end, I wish to thank all my panelists for being an integral part of my learning. I thank my designers for making me shine at the pageant. Thank you for molding me into the girl you see on stage today. I'm blessed.”
