Panchsheel Greens- Residents face an uphill problem as lifts malfunction

The morning of 28th December had a rather unexpected and unpleasant start for Mamta Singh, 61, resident of Panchsheel Greens 1, Sector 16b, Greater Noida West. On her way back from her morning walk, she was forced to take stairs as both the lifts in the tower she lived in, B3, were not working. According to her son, Mayank Pratap Singh, it took her 30 minutes to reach her flat which is on the 17th floor. By the time she reached, her blood pressure had shot up.

As gathered by residents, on October 30 one of the lifts of Panchsheel Greens society had broken down. To make matters worse, the second, which is the only other lift in the society, seems to have a mind of its own. It seems to work on its own whims and fancies. This means, as per the residents, that it often does not work. The residents point that this second lift, which is also comparatively narrower than the main lift, was not working on the morning of December 28. That is the time when Mamta Singh went through her ordeal. The residents point that there is increased pressure on the other, smaller lift, adding that this lift is not enough to accommodate the increased pressure.

Residents allege that when they complained about this issue to the builder, he said that some of the residents have not been paying maintenance charges properly and that is the reason they cannot fix it.
Singh said, “We have two lifts in our tower. The one lift which has not been working for several months is the bigger lift. The other lift is very small which was also not working properly on December 28, 2021. Whenever it works, people are forced to crowd it, which is especially dangerous during Covid times. If we need to use a medical stretcher for any resident in case of an emergency, then it will be very problematic. I have paid maintenance charges from time to time. So I should not be deprived of any facilities."

Sanjeev Kumar, a resident who lives on the 19th floor, says, “In the morning when I was taking my family member to the hospital, the other lift was not working. So we had to use the stairs. It’s been more than 2 months that the bigger lift is not working at all. The smaller lift is also not working properly”.

The residents wrote a letter to the District Magistrate on November 11, 2021. They alleged in the letter that the builder’s maintenance agency is doing this intentionally.

An official from the maintenance team says, “We will resolve the issue of both lifts within a week. This has occurred because the residents are not paying their maintenance charges. In the future, we plan to hand over the maintenance to the AOA."
