Horror Movies Based on a True Story

Sometimes all we want is to curl up in bed and watch a horror film. well maybe not all but many definitly do. These lovers of horror movies enjoy it even more when they get to know that a scary movie is based on a true story. It makes the experience even more terrifying. Knowing that someone has experienced that terror does take up the terror metre several degrees up. Here are a few horror films based on actual events that you absolutely must-see.

The Exorcist (1973)

Every adolescent can act devilish from time to time, but nothing like this. The young daughter of an actress begins to experience strange changes in her physical appearance and personality in The Exorcist. When the strange occurrences become more disturbing and evil, her
mother is concerned that medical doctors will not be able to help them. (And yes, it is based on a real-life exorcism of a young boy  that occurred in 1949.)

The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)

After learning that their son has cancer, a family relocates to Connecticut and needs to be closer to his medical team. As they settle in, the house's history begins to emerge, and they learn the hard way that bad things happen to good people. The film is loosely based on a rumoured 1980s haunting of a Connecticut family.

The Amityville Horror (2005)

The Amityville Horror, arguably the most famous horror film based on terrifying, allegedly actual events, has spent more than four decades terrifying audiences with the story of a young couple and their house in Amityville, New York, which is haunted by violent spirits. The real-life Lutz family claimed to have suffered a fate similar to their fictional counterparts four years before the film's release. The family reported hearing strange sounds and seeing strange sights for nearly a month after moving into an Amityville home one year after Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six of his family members there. They eventually fled their home.

The Watcher (2016)

Have you ever had the feeling that someone is watching you? A young couple buys their first home, only to discover that someone is unhappy with them and will not stop until they leave. Here's the terrifying true story about how the house came to be.

The Conjuring (2013)

Only living in a haunted house with five daughters is scarier than having five daughters. The Conjuring (part of a film universe that includes seven other actual horror films) follows the Perron family as they battle demonic forces.

The Conjuring 2

Another actual case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren is brought to the screen in this supernatural thriller. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles as  Lorraine and Ed Warren. In one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, they travel to north London to assist a single mother  raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.

The Rite

Do you enjoy stories about exorcisms and the devil? This film, based on the life of Father Gary Thomas, one of America's most famous exorcists, will scare the hell out of you. One word of caution: do not  attempt this alone.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

This is based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, who was possessed by powerful demons who took nearly a year to exorcise. It's one of the most well-known exorcism films, and it's all true!

The Possession

This film is based on a true story about a haunted Dybukk box. Whoever purchased that box was responsible for the consequences. On eBay, several owners of the box reported strange occurrences. So you want to keep your wine bottles safe in a box?

Annabelle

This film's opening scene is identical to that of The Conjuring. The story continues with the most terrifying possessed doll ever created. It's also true that those who taunted the doll in the museum risked dying or being killed. Spooked? We're the same way.
