Noida: Residents share displeasure with Authority's plantation campaign

Noida: Noida Authority is doing its biggest plantation campaign under the banner of Vrihad Vriksharopan karyakram under which, 2.64 lakh saplings will be planted throughout the day across 62 places in Noida. However, some residents are displeased with this campaign and are raising their doubts.

The RWA sector-51 alleges that the Authority is degrading the green cover in their area by cutting down trees. Sanjeev Kumar, Sector-51 RWA General Secretary informs that earlier, one section of the land of the green area of children park sector 51 was given to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation where a station and banquet hall has come up. Now again, 25 fully grown trees in this area have been cut to make way for an international furniture brand.

He says, "On one hand, Noida Authority is talking about planting trees, however, they are cutting fully-fledged grown trees in sector 51 children's park. Even several small plants can't be compared with a fully grown old tree. This is wrong and the plantation campaign is a mere eyewash."

Anil Khanna, RWA president of sector-41 says, "I am against the idea of destroying the green area of sector 51's children park to some furniture company. The trees that have been cut were more than 20 years old. Planting trees shouldn't be done as a formality only but the Authority should also maintain them."

Residents of Sector 77 Noida, Express Zenith allege that while Authority is talking about new trees, it is not providing any maintenance for the 300 already planted trees in their area. Residents suggest that first, the Authority must dedicate people to take care of the existing trees before planting new ones.

Sumit Dubey, a resident of Express Zenith says, "Our builder used to look after the green belt area there but he was blamed for encroachment. So, he left looking after the area, and now, the residents plant trees but there is no one to look after them. What is the point of planting trees without ensuring their survival?"
