Vinay Pathak, a common man's hero

Amidst heroes with flexing muscles, 8-pack abs and perfect hair do's in Bollywood what goes missing is the image of a common man. Vinay Pathak (53) is one actor who not only found that image of a common man but also re-enforced it through a series of heart-warming and closer-to-life portrayals in the movies he has done. As he turns 53 today, we celebrate Vinay Pathak and his work.

After the success of the movie Dasvidaniya (2008), Vinay Pathak made a name for himself in the vast and blazingly bright world of Bollywood. Over the years, he has delivered some exceptional performances as an actor. Often portraying a common man on screen, Pathak is somewhat a modern-day equivalent of actors such as Farooq Sheikh and Amol Palekar.

Popularly known for his famous characters like Bharat Bhushan in Bheja fry and Manu Gupta in Chalo dilli, Vinay Pathak was born in Bhojpur district on July 12, 1968. After completing his graduation, he moved to the United States for further studies. It was there that his career as an actor started blooming. While studying at the State University of New York, he received roles in movies like Khosla ka Ghosla.

Having completed almost 22 years in the Indian film industry, Pathak still believes there's a lot to discover as an actor. "It's so easy to be cocky about anything. But when you actually get into the details, you realize there's so much to discover. It has been 20 years and I'm still discovering so many things. Till today I feel 'Oh my God I was so clueless about this," Pathak spoke in an interview. Pathak said he aims to tap into this vulnerability in all his performances. "It isn't just about getting a character's accent right, but taking a deep dive into the headspace of the part," he said.

His memorable dialogues like "Dhanwan logon ke jeevan mein aaram toh hai ... lekin vishram nahi hai", "Desire is the root cause of all evil" and "Duniya usi ko dabati hai joh dabta hai" left a print in everyone's memory. For his impeccable performance in the movie Gour Hari Dastaan, the actor won the Best Actor award at the Extravagant India-International Indian film festival in Paris.

In his own words, Vinay Pathak really admires commercial directors, but does not see himself as a good fit for mainstream commercial roles. "I really don't do commercial cinema. Not because I look down upon them or anything, but I think I am a little inadequate to be part of a cinema where I feel false. I feel it's not real... running around the trees," Vinay mentioned in an interview.

"People who make it work, who make it look real, are the people who I actually admire. It's an art, it's a skill and everybody doesn't have that," he added. Vinay says he is a huge admirer of 'Johnny Gaddaar' director Sriram Raghavan, who makes films in the commercial space but still manages to avoid making them look completely commercial. "Apart from a few commercial films, I am known for films like 'Dasvidaniya', 'Chalo Dilli', 'Johnny Gaddaar', 'Manorama Six Feet Under'. Sriram still pulls me to do his film and I love to work with him." said Pathak in an interview.

Talking about Pathak, his friend and an actor himself, Ranvir Shorrey said in an interview, "Vinay and I have amazing chemistry that allows us to complement each other on-stage. I have always enjoyed working with him."

Today, the actor turns 3 today and we put forth our heartful wishes.
