Thumri Festival, a three day celebration of Hindustani Classical Music

New Delhi: Sahitya Kala Parishad is bringing back the Thumri Festival, a three-day musical event.  The event will start at 6:30 pm on August 26, 2022 and will go on till August 28, 2022 at Kamani Auditorium in Mandi House. Several artists of Hindustani Classical music are to be a part of this festival, with their performances lined up for three days.

On the first day of the festival, the event will kick start with a melodious and mesmerizing performance by Madhumita Ray. Ray received her musical training from exponents like Pt Vasant Thakar and Ustad Ghulam Taqi Khan and Ustad Ghulam Hussain Khan. Her music comes from the rich legacy of Gwalior-Rampur gharana. Her performance will be followed by Pt. Bholanath Mishra, another prominent musician who comes from a rich lineage of Hindustani Classical music. He is known for his versatility and comes from the Benaras Gharana. Concluding the performances on the first day will be Indrani Mukherjee, another Thumri and Khayal exponent.

The second day will start with the performance by Dr. Rita Dev, who comes from the Benaras Gharana and was trained under Dr. Girija Devi. Following her will be Sonali Bose, also a disciple of legendary Dr. Girija Devi. The last performance of the day will be by yet another disciple of Girija Devi,  Kalkaji Mukherjee, who was also trained under Sushri Sipra Bose.

On the last day as well, several performances by renowned artists are lined up. First performance of the day will be by Indresh Mishra, who represents Kirana and Banaras Gharana. His initial musical training was under his own father, Pt. Uma Nath Mishra. The second performance will be by Sunanda Sharma, who also comes from Banaras Gharana and has been a student of Girija Devi. The last performance of the event will be by none other than Padma Shri Shubha Mudgal. She is an exponent of genres such as Khyal, Thumri, Dadra and more.
