With the arrival of Navratri, there is an increased demand for vrat food. It is hard to find taste in food without onion and garlic but Gayatri can prove one wrong. Gayatri Rathod, 48, is the founder of an online platform where she delivers homemade Gujarati food. A shy person and uncomfortable in taking, she is an expert when it comes to concocting flavours without the traditional use of onion garlic.

Although Gayatri is a resident of Dwarka, her heart belongs to Gujarat. As we met Gayatri in Sanmati Apartments, Sector 6, she was wearing a traditional ghagra choli. She specialises in 'Dhokla', 'Dabeli' and 'Khandvi' but loves to cook all dishes in Gujrati style.

Although Gayatri loved cooking as a child, the thought of pursuing it as a profession occurred much later to her. The story started 10 years back when she was inspired by her friends. When she saw her friends participating in community events, Gayatri got inspired. "I always wanted to do something where I can use my passion and when I saw my friends putting stalls of their hobbies at events, I realised this is my path", says Gayatri.

She thus set up her first stall in 2012. Gayatri agrees that Gujarati food is a little sweet which brought her backlash in the beginning but she wanted to stay true to her roots and make authentic Gujarati food. This became the beginning of her business. With time, she also started a tiffin service where she feeds around 20 people daily.

When we talked about the Navratri special of 2022, she says 'Aloo ka halwa and kuttu ki Puri' is for everyone but the young generation does not like the same old recipes so she has made some personal changes. The youth among her customers are fans of her Navratri special idlis and Dosa. Her sabudana vada with kuttu chutney is among her specialities.

With self-assurance and a lot of belief, Gayatri is an inspiration for all homemakers who want to start something of their own. When it comes to chasing dreams, the sky is the limit for her. Gayatri has her plans ready with her business. She wants her brand to be recognised throughout the city and beyond. She says, "I have captured the hearts of Delhiites and now my target is the country."
