Deserted & Dangerous: Missing streetlights leave several Dwarka sectors in dark

Dwarka: In our series on Delhi’s dark spots, CitySpidey travelled to the suburbs of Southwest Delhi, Dwarka sub-city (Sector 13 and Sector 17), late Wednesday night. What we discovered was a well-planned neighbourhood with 30-foot-wide streets and gated apartments. But even in this area, characterised by high-rise apartments, DDA flats, public schools, parks and gardens, several stretches were shrouded in darkness.

The sub-city is maintained by the Delhi Development Authority. CitySpidey travelled on two routes — from Sector 13 district park towards Sector 17, Dwarka North Police station. Here is what we found:

Many areas in Sector 13 and Sector 17 and some stretches near government school had lights, but these were dimly lit as they were covered by tree branches. Lights were not lit on the road heading towards the Dwarka Sector 12 Metro station. The streets too had insufficient light poles.

A stretch from Sector 13 district park towards the Delhi government school in Sector 13 and Abhinav Global School (Sector 13) was shrouded in darkness. The service lane and the area near the park in front of these schools were also found to be in darkness.

While going towards Sector 17, Dwarka North Police station from the signal of Sector 13/17, we found the entire stretch in dark. The stretch starts from the signal and ends at the Building of Dwarka North Police Station making a T-point. There is a school named NK Bagrodia Public School along the stretch and some societies as well. The stretch in front of the school was dimly lit due to the lights of school. But, both sides of the road were almost dark except some dim light near societies’ gates.

Locals said that the both the stretches in Sector 13 and 17 remained in darkness for a long time. Poor maintenance and lack of streetlights has been the cause of such darkness on these stretches.

Dark stretches in the National Capital hog the limelight after the horrific Kanjhawala incident. CitySpidey has started a series to highlight the issue in an attempt to draw attention of the authority to take appropriate action.
