The Greater Noida Authority has felled 31 fully grown trees along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway in Sector 154 and Sector 128 to build two foot-over bridges.
In Sector 154, five neem trees with trunks of 86 cm, 71cm, 60 cm, 56 cm and 42 cm diameter were chopped by the authority to build the foot overbridge. A peepal tree with a trunk of 110 cm diameter was also felled. The other trees that were felled include two amaltas and dhak.
A total of 14 calliandra trees with of 20 cm diameter each were also uprooted. In all 25 trees were felled in Sector 154 and six in Sector 128.
Three neem trees with a diameter of 130 cm, 96 cm and 40 cm respectively were felled in Sector 128 along with a gulmohar tree with a diameter of 70 cm. Two banyan trees with a diamater of 30 cm and 35 cm respectively were chopped in the sector.
As per environmentalist Vikrant Tongad, the developmental work could have been carried out without felling the trees including the neem trees which were very old.
