With just a week left for Diwali, residents of Sector 51, a densely populated pocket in Noida, have started preparing for the festival with a grand Diwali Mela on Saturday for a social cause.

Apart from the stalls of colourful lights, home decor and diyas (traditional lamps), the residents have also decided to put up stalls for collecting recyclable and reusable items from fellow residents to be distributed among the needy.

Anita Prakash Joshi of Sector 51 (Blocks A and B) said there would be counters for donating woollen clothes, bags, hot water bottles, utensils and stationary etc. which would be given to the needy. She said, ''We invite the residents to come forward and contribute for the cause.”

The RWA is already in touch with an NGO which has been working for supporting cancer patients and their relatives at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi. Joshi said that the collected items would be handed over to the NGO for distribution among those in need.

She informed that the RWA is also working on celebrating the festival plastic free. This would help sensitise the residents to avoid the use of plastic.

The RWA is also planning to promote handicraft products by allotting stalls to artisans for selling their wares at the mela. The mela will start in the evening and will last for 3-4 hours

Joshi said that music and dance programmes are also planned to make it enjoyable for the residents. She invited all the residents to have a glimpse of the celebration.
