South Delhi residents will soon be able to get birth and death certificates online for free. However, the facility through Citizen Service Bureaus (CSB) will continue to levy a nominal fee.
Since many people do not have access to online payment mode, they don’t prefer obtaining the certificates online. However, online name and addition facility would soon be made through modification in the software.
The proposal is likely to be cleared in the next House meeting as councillors have already passed private member's resolutions on these lines.
In 2019, 62,000 birth certificates were issued online against 1.45 lakh offline, while in 2018, 73,000 birth certificates were generated online as against 2 lakh though CSB.
The first copy of the birth and death certificate would be delivered at home without any charge. However, Rs.21 would be charged for subsequent birth certificate copies. In case the baby’s name is added after one year, Rs.31 will be charged. Similarly, Rs.11 would be charged for obtaining a death certificate. East Delhi Municipal Corporation had started the first free copy scheme.
