Dwarka Forum: Dear SDMC, this is how cleaning is done

As residents find SDMC’s efforts for sanitation inadequate, members of Dwarka Forum take it upon themselves to help SDMC staff in cleaning.

Dwarka Forum: Dear SDMC, this is how cleaning is done Dwarka Forum members with SDMC staff during the cleaning on October 19.

Dissatisfied with South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s quality of sanitation work, Dwarka Forum (DF) has started monitoring the staff to achieve better results.

On October 19, DF members guided SDMC staff to clean the road between Shivam Apartments in Sector 12 and Dwarka International School. Madhuri Varshney and P Menon, president and treasurer of DF respectively, were present at the cleaning. They discussed their issues with the sanitary department officials and apprised them of sanitation conditions in the sub-city. On October 20, DF guided the corporation staff to clean up Sector 5.

"When SDMC issued a circular dated April 22, we were excited about the prospect of a clean and green Dwarka," said Menon. "DF immediately printed a thousand copies of the notification and circulated it across Dwarka. It also conducted door-to-door visits, workshops, seminars in societies and DDA pockets to educate people about proper garbage handling. We met the SDMC civic centre commissioner on the subject. Even after putting in all these efforts, the situation remained the same as six months ago. So we decided to put in more effort. Our participation in cleaning is part of this.”

He added, “Even today, SDMC has not done its homework. DF members have to guide the staff and point out garbage-strewn areas. They also help the SDMC staff understand what the public expects and check attendance. We are doing this for the sub-city and to make the system more effective by public participation.”

“We have a target to clean the lanes of sectors 4, 5 and 12 this week," Varshney said. "Next week we will start work in Sector 11. The idea is to carry out systematic cleaning in all Dwarka sectors.”
