H3N2 virus outbreak in India - Know everything about this fatal flu

Another deadly virus, known as H3N2, has been causing concern across the country in recent times. H3N2 is a subtype of the Influenza A virus and is more severe than the H1N1 virus, which caused a pandemic in 2009. The flu is spreading alarmingly fast in different states, with patients suffering from prevalent flu-like symptoms. The sudden change in weather has increased the chances of spreading the H3N2 influenza, with widespread symptoms such as cough, high fever, runny nose, excessive sneezing, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Some people may experience chest discomfort and difficulty swallowing, accompanied by a persistent fever.

Medical experts have clearly stated that H3N2 can prove fatal for young children, pregnant women, and elderly citizens if not detected early. People with pre-existing health conditions are also at a higher risk of catching the virus. We need to be extra cautious and maintain personal hygiene to prevent the spread of this lethal virus, which can easily spread from an infected person's droplets through the air, surface, or direct contact, just like the coronavirus.

Virologists and pulmonologists have suggested that we prioritize respiratory hygiene as this virus tends to attack our respiratory tract. Although it can be challenging to maintain hygiene, especially during busy working hours, it should be our top priority to keep the disease at bay. We can follow some important guidelines to avoid the peril:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  • If handwashing is not possible, use sanitisers or antiseptic liquids.
  • Avoid touching your face and nose frequently.
  • Wear a mask in crowded places.
  • Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing.
  • Maintain physical distance to prevent the spread of the disease

Physicians have stated that antibiotics are not helpful in treating H3N2, so unnecessary intake of antibiotics should be avoided. We must emphasize building stronger immunity to fight any kind of health condition.
