CONRWA: Want an error-free election? This is what CEC got to do...

The Confederation of NCR Residents Welfare Associations (CONRWA) wrote a letter to Syed Nasim Ahmad Zaidi, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, on April 12 urging the need for an error-free election.

The move comes two days after President Pranav Mukherjee advocated the need for a long-due electoral reform in India.

CONRWA argued that the post-election assessment always points out some faults in the election process. This leaves scope for the public to start doubting the democratic process of free and fair elections.

In the letter, the confederation said that the nomination process of a candidate should be simpler than the present comprehensive one. The candidate should be given a time of 24 hours to rectify the mistake made while filing nomination forms before his candidature is rejected.

It further said that if voters’ names are deleted due to some reason while revising the electoral rolls of a particular constituency, details of the deletion should be made public on the respective district election commission website. It argued that it was not conceivable for voters to go through the entire electoral rolls of the district to find his or her name in the list.

In the letter, PS Jain, president of CONRWA, said, “A candidate should be restricted to contest only from one constituency seat to reduce the election commission’s cost. In case a candidate is declared a winner from two seats, he resigns from the seat where CEC conducts bypolls. The CEC has to deploy the entire mechanism for free and fair election, and voters are forced to cast their vote again to elect another candidate.”
