Dwarka: Open manholes and uncovered drains causing accidents

Dwarka: Jagmohan Verma, a senior citizen in his early seventies and a resident of Astha Apartments, Sector 6, Dwarka, was out for his evening walk on July 16, 2022. He was walking on the pedestrian footpath. As soon as he reached Dayanand Apartments, Sector 6, because he couldn't see the open manhole on the footpath in dark, he fell. As a result, he now has a plaster on his left leg.

Jagmohan, while sharing his plight, says, “The accident happened at around 8.30 in the night. I couldn't see any manhole, but it was there, uncovered.” He says that the callous approach of the authority is responsible for his injury.

Similar accidents have happened in Dwarka in the past as well. Like Jagmohan Verma, the wife of JC Malhotra, another senior citizen and a resident of Welcome Apartments CGHS, Dwarka, suffered a lot because she was injured after falling in an open drain on a footpath in Sector 3. Not just this, Malhotra himself once narrowly escaped such injury on the footpath near Batuk Ji and National Apartments, Sector 3. To avoid any such accidents, he then started a campaign by writing to the authorities, however, nothing much happened. He says, “If you fall into such pits, you could die. My wife suffered a lot because of a similar accident. Despite my campaign, the authorities did nothing. Who should be held responsible for any such accident that happens again."

All Dwarka Resident Federation(ADRF) has written a letter to DDA on the subject to ensure the coverage of all such open manholes and drains. General secretary of ADRF, Robin Sharma says, “DDA does not seem to be that serious about the issue. This is a threat to the lives of the pedestrian and such open manholes and open drains must be covered properly. ADRF will be following up on the subject.”
