Here’s why this lane is unsafe after sundown

Security in a back lane in Sector 5, Dwarka, has become a cause for concern for residents in the area. Residents do not feel safe commuting in the one-kilometre long stretch from DDA SFS pocket to Mansarovar Apartments after the sun sets.

Mahesh Gupta, general secretary of RWA of DDA SFS pocket, tells City Spidey, “The light fittings and bulbs are either missing or are defunct. We’ve complained to the BSES, DDA and SDMC but to no effect. We also raised the issue in a police-public meeting but all we got was assurances.”

He adds, “After sunset, the whole stretch becomes unsafe as hooligans and anti-social elements are consuming liquor in their cars. There have been incidents of purse, mobile and chain snatching here. Some of the victims are of my pocket.”

Residents also cite incidents of theft of wheels, batteries and music systems due to the darkness in the stretch. Societies such as Kesarvani, Mansarovar, Vivekanand, Ganinath Nikunj and DDA SFS pocket are located along the stretch. Residents of these societies have installed some bulbs on their boundary wall so that the darkness on the road could be reduced.

AR Shukla, president of Ganinath Nikunj Apartments, says, “We have installed a couple of bulbs on the rear side of our society so that the area can be illuminated. We were concerned about security so we made this arrangement. But it is the duty of the authorities and they should ensure that this road is properly illuminated.” Shukla adds that though the infrastructure is there, yet the authorities have not maintained it for a long time.

The police also says that the civic authorities have been written to about the matter but there are still hundreds of such stretches across the sub city.
